A new SMS tip-off service has led to the arrest of 10 people since its launch. According to a joint statement by police and Primedia, more than 1 600 smses had been sent so far.

Following the launch, the Sunday Times report that six suspected cable thieves have been arrested in Pretoria; a suspected fraudster was caught in Silverton, Pretoria; an armed robber nabbed in Rustenburg, North West; and two other men were arrested in Laudium, outside Pretoria. ‘We are delighted at the large number of tip-offs that are coming in from the public,’ said Director Sally de Beer, spokesperson for Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi. ‘About 300 active investigations across the country are currently under way as a result of tips received from Primedia.’ De Beer said she had confidence that the number of arrests would increase once the campaign gained momentum.
