Prisoners escape dressed as warders
Published in:
Date: 31 May 2007

Two prisoners serving over 20-years each for armed robbery escaped from the Johannesburg Correctional Centre disguised as warders.

Correctional services spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said Nkosinathi Mashiane and Mandson Lubisi had walked out of the prison after warders mistook them for two of their own. One of the prisoners used a green BMW as a getaway car, while the other ran away and disappeared among surrounding houses. According to a report on the iafrica.com site, Wolela said there was currently no conclusive evidence that the prisoners had received help from the inside or if warders had helped them obtain the uniforms.
